Maintenance Steps for Linear Guide Rails

When used for linear reciprocating motion, linear guide rails offer a higher rated load capacity than linear bearings and can also withstand a certain amount of torque. Under high-load conditions, they enable highly precise linear motion. The function of a linear guide rail is to support and guide moving components in a specified direction, enabling reciprocating linear motion. According to the type of friction involved, linear motion guide rails can be classified into sliding-friction guide rails, rolling-friction guide rails, elastic-friction guide rails, fluid-friction guide rails, and others.   First, remove the wheel. Remember to collect the screws—losing them would be a real hassle. Next, remove the bearing. Some wheels are extremely difficult to take apart, and the bearings can be really tough to get off. So use the hex wrench (the same one you used to remove the screws) to carefully pry it out. Don’t rush—bearings aren’t easily damaged. Then, use a toothbrush to scrub away any dirt from the surface of the bearing.

  Some bearing side covers are removable, while others are not. First, determine whether your bearing has a removable side cover. How do you tell? If there’s a C-ring around the edge of the bearing’s side cover, then the cover is removable. If there isn’t one, the cover is non-removable—but there are exceptions. If the side cover is removable, it’s quite simple: Use a flathead screwdriver to pry open the gap in the C-ring, then carefully remove the side cover. You only need to remove one side; be sure to collect both the C-ring and the side cover afterward.

  If it’s non-removable, it’ll be quite a hassle— you’ll have to resort to destructive methods. Use a screwdriver to pry open the seam of the side cover, applying firm pressure. Don’t doubt it— that’s exactly how it’s done. However, this side cover can’t be reinstalled once it’s removed. Remember: as soon as one side is taken off, it’ll be permanently damaged.

  Remove the side covers of all bearings and start cleaning them. Pour some degreasing oil into a bowl, then drop the bearings in and stir for a while to clean the linear guide rails.
