1. Inspection and Maintenance of Gaps in Ball Screw Nut Assemblies and Support Systems

The inspection method involves using an internal diameter dial indicator in combination with bearing steel balls: place the steel balls into the center hole at one end of the ball screw and use the dial indicator to precisely measure the axial runout of the ball screw. Simultaneously, use another internal diameter dial indicator to precisely measure the movement of the worktable. Rotate the ball screw both clockwise and counterclockwise, observe the readings displayed on the two dial indicators, and determine the location of the fault based on the variations in these readings.

If, when using a dial indicator to precisely measure the ball screw, the needle does not wobble as the ball screw rotates in both forward and reverse directions, it indicates that the ball screw itself is stable and free of wobble. However, if the needle of the internal-diameter dial indicator does wobble, it suggests that the ball screw has a wobbling issue. The difference in readings from this internal-diameter dial indicator represents the axial play distance of the ball screw. At this point, we should check whether the backing cap of the support bearing is properly tightened, whether the support bearing has worn out or become ineffective, and whether the preload sealing ring for the rolling bearing is appropriately fitted. If the rolling bearing is in good condition, simply re-machining and reinstalling a new preload sealing ring will suffice. But if the rolling bearing is damaged, it must be replaced, followed by re-machining and reinstalling a new preload sealing ring, and then tightening the backing cap securely. The magnitude of axial play in the ball screw is primarily determined by the precision of the preload sealing ring on the support bearing. Ideally, during ball-screw assembly, there should be no clearance between the two ends; instead, the support bearing should have a slight interference fit of approximately 0.02 mm.
