The ball spline utilizes balls housed in an outer sleeve surrounding the spline shaft, which roll smoothly within precisely ground raceways while transmitting torque. Thanks to its unique contact design featuring a larger contact angle (40°), this spline not only offers high sensitivity but also significantly enhances its load-carrying capacity. It is ideally suited for environments characterized by excessive vibration and shock loads, high positioning accuracy requirements, and demands for high-speed motion performance—environments in which it can perform effectively. Moreover, even when used as a replacement for linear ball bushings, the ball spline boasts a rated load capacity that is more than ten times greater than that of a conventional linear bushing at the same shaft diameter. Advantages of ball splines:
1. High load capacity
The ball’s raceway grooves are precision-ground and feature a 40° contact angle in the Gothic style. Due to the large contact angle, these bearings offer high load-carrying capacity in both the radial and torque directions.
2. Zero backlash in the rotational direction
The splined shaft is fitted with balls arranged in 2 to 4 rows, each having a contact angle of 40°, and is combined with the outer sleeve of the spline. By adjusting the preload method, the clearance in the rotational direction can be reduced to zero.
3. High sensitivity
Thanks to the special design of the steel ball’s contact point, in addition to its high rigidity, it is also more sensitive and can reduce energy waste.
4. High rigidity
Due to the large contact angle, it exhibits high rigidity. Appropriate preload can be applied as needed, thereby achieving higher torque stiffness and moment stiffness.
5. Simple assembly
Thanks to its special design, even if the splined outer sleeve comes loose from the splined shaft, the steel balls will not fall out. As a result, assembly, maintenance, and inspection are all very easy.
