Linear guideways are primarily used in mechanical structures that demand high precision, such as imported machine tools, bending machines, and laser welding machines. Linear guideways are typically used in conjunction with linear axes. Rolling steel balls are employed between the moving and fixed components of the linear guideway. Because rolling steel balls are well-suited for high-speed motion, they feature a low coefficient of friction and high sensitivity, enabling them to meet the operational requirements of moving parts in machine tools, such as tool holders and tool posts. However, if the force acting on the steel balls is excessively large, the balls will experience prolonged preloading, which in turn increases the motion resistance of the support structure.

The first step is to prevent rusting. When handling linear guides directly with your hands, be sure to thoroughly wash off any sweat from your hands and apply mineral oil before operation. Special attention should be paid to rust prevention during the rainy season and summer. Secondly, keep the surrounding environment clean—maintaining both the linear guide itself and its immediate vicinity free of dirt. Even tiny particles of dust that are invisible to the naked eye can enter the guide, increasing wear, vibration, and noise.
Compared to the maintenance of linear guide rails, their installation is relatively simple. Before installation, remove any machining burrs and dirt from the mounting surface on the machine bed. Place the linear slide rail flat on the machine bed, ensuring that the reference surface of the rail is in close contact with the side mounting surface of the bed. Tighten the mounting bolts, but do not fully tighten them yet, and adjust the rail’s reference surface as closely as possible to the transverse mounting surface of the machine bed. Finally, lock the rail positioning bolts to ensure a snug fit between the rail and the transverse mounting surface of the machine bed.
